A CO2 laser can engrave stainless steel with a pre-treatment applied, or a fiber laser can also engrave or etch stainless steel. Stainless steel is also suitable for laser annealing. Deep laser engraving is commonly used for marking stainless steel.

Processing with a laser causes a noticeable colour change on the metal – right through to a deep, dark-black colour. Black marking also creates a strong contrast and a very matte appearance, without reflections. This noticeably increases the manual and automatic legibility of even the smallest of pixels.

A very common method in the industry for marking stainless steel is engraving. Engraving provides a much deeper marking than any other method and makes the marking more legible and durable, both before and after treatment of the material, e.g. galvanisation, which requires a greater depth of marking.
